N2 Wood also has a fully stocked tool checkout open to all Parsons users—feel free to use it as an alternative.

Wood Shop

The shop has been expanded and reconfigured with an open floor plan
A new compressor system is being installed; dust collection is being updated

Metal Shop

Layout has changed; the welding area and a new grinding room are located within the shop
Plasma CNC is offline until further notice
A dedicated Jewelry Studio is now accessible through the Metal Shop

Jewelry Studio

New space accessible through the E4 Metal Shop
Ferrous and Non-Ferrous processes are now separated
Layout and function may evolve during the semester

Teaching Studio

New instructional space adjacent to E4 shops and open work area
Equipped with basic machinery and storage for class use
May still be under construction during the first two weeks of class

Tool Checkout

Now located slightly down the hall
Same tool inventory as previous years
Open during studio hours and staffed by student workers

Material Store

Students buy materials online, then check in at Tool Checkout for pickup
Sheet goods and hardwood now stored in the Wood Shop and Teaching Studio

Access

Orientations for E4 (Wood, Metal, and Non-Ferrous/Jewelry) are available through scheduled classes.

Legacy students who previously completed an orientation or class in E4 retain access for the remainder of their time at The New School Students who take a class and are oriented in an E4 area retain access for the duration of their enrollment
All classes scheduled in E4 will receive in-class, staff-led orientations, regardless of prior training
Faculty are required to attend orientations with their students and demo techniques used in the shops
N2 Wood remains available for general wood access and includes a well-stocked tool checkout

Students who have previous training in metal have a route to access based on prior coursework and/or portfolio examples. Please submit your requests via the form below, and a staff member will reach out.

No orientation is needed for open work areas and Tool Checkout.
