Alternative Processing Lab

Open to: all students who have had necessary training with equipment and processes
Sheila C. Johnson Design Center, 66 5th Ave, 5th Floor   •   Closed until Wednesday, August 26th

Academic Year Update

For the remainder of the summer, the Alternative Processing Lab is closed while our team continues conducting inventory and resetting our facilities. Please reach out to the Photography & Media Resources email if you have any questions.

Our regular business hours will resume on the first day of the fall semester: Wednesday, August 26th.

Mandatory Orientation

Orientations for the space are offered throughout the semester in a limited time frame; the orientation does not teach students how to employ such processes. Students who are not enrolled in a course related to alternative processes should have prior experience in order to engage with any approved chemical practices.

Please refer to the embedded Google calendar below to register an orientation. Under the desired calendar date, select ‘more details’ to access the form. Should you need an alternative date, you may reach out to us directly by email to inquire about additional orientations.

Students must also complete the Photography & Media Resources agreement form.

Reservation / Use Protocol

Students wishing to use this space can check in or book a reservation with the stationed technician at the front desk, located in the fifth-floor lobby of 66 Fifth Avenue. Reservations can only be made in-person and may be booked once per calendar week for up to two calendar weeks. Walk-ins are welcomed while there’s occupancy.

Students must complete the Alternative Processing Lab orientation in order to access and reserve the space. Students who are not enrolled in a course related to alternative processes must have prior experience in order to engage with such practices.

About the Alternative Processing Lab

The alternative process lab supports the following processes: cyanotype, Van Dyke brown, anthotype, lumen printing, image transfers, amongst others. There are several sized UV exposure units—one that support prints as large as 25×36″.
