E4 Wood & Metal Shop Access

Starting Fall 2024:

Orientations for the E4 Shops (including Wood, Metal, and Non-Ferrous/Jewelry) are now only available via classes scheduled to use those shops. E4 is a small part of the 57 labs, shops, and studios across 70,000 square feet that comprise the Making Center. Its mission is to facilitate learning and making in a healthy and safe environment. This adjustment to the orientation policy is designed to uphold that mission and dedicate open task time to classes scheduled in this area.

We will no longer be hosting general orientations for the student body and access will be through classes and specific groups via coordination of Program Directors.

Legacy Students: Those who previously took a class or received an orientation in E4 Wood + E4 Metal, E4 Non-ferrous/Jewelry will continue to have access for the duration of their time at The New School

Students in classes: Students who take a class and are oriented in an E4 area will retain access for the duration of their time at The New School.

Class Scheduling and Orientations: To ensure a shared understanding of safety, tool usage, and best practices, all classes scheduled to use E4 spaces will be provided an  in-class, staff-led orientation (regardless of previous orientation status). Faculty are required to participate in-class orientations to ensure consistency in safety practices. Faculty are also required to demo techniques to students in the shops they include in their syllabus.

E4 Tool Checkout:

Tool Checkout is general access to all students. $15,000 worth of new hand tools has been added to our inventory

New items include: Jewelry equipment, Photo light boxes, 3 point metal rod benders, drills, screwdrivers, hammers, etc. Have ideas for items to include? As long as they do not pose a safety issue we are happy to consider them. Email us at e4staff@newschool.edu.

No orientation is needed for open work areas and Tool Checkout.
