N2 General Shop

Open to: all students who have taken the mandatory orientation

Students who were oriented in the past will retain access (see eligibility and requirements).

Due to limited staffing, all plastic facilities will be closed.

Mandatory Orientation

Orientations have concluded for the time being to allow as much open task time as possible as students prepare for finals. If you were unable to attend an orientation event earlier in the coming/current semester and would like to be added to the orientation waitlist, please submit your interest to the Making Center Orientation Waitlist

Based on waitlist responses, we may be able to open up additional orientation events on a limited basis.

The Hands-on Tier 1 Orientations will be held at 2 – 3 times per day, Monday through Friday from August 29th through October 7th. 

First, make sure you complete the Canvas element and Quiz.

N2 Tier 1

Tier 1 Orientations are now for Spring 2022 please click the button below to enroll in the Orientation

There are two Tiers of  Open Sign up Orientations for access to Wood Shop machinery and tools. The completion of each Tier gives students access to specific equipment in the N2 General Shop and E4 Wood Shop. Tier 1 Orientations are offered exclusively in the N2 General Shop and Tier 2 Orientations are offered exclusively in the E4 Wood Shop.

  • Tier 1 Orientation covers safe operation of the band saws, drill presses, sanders, and basic hand tools.
  • Tier 2 Orientation covers safe operation of the Table Saw, Miter Saw and Panel Saw.

Documented completion of Tier 1 Orientation is a prerequisite for entry into Tier 2 Orientation. See Tier 1 manual below.

DRESS CODE

  • No open-toe shoes or heels are allowed.
  • No loose clothing.
  • All long hair must be tied back.
  • All hanging accessories must be removed.

About the N2 General Shop

The General Wood/Metal Shop is equipped with sanders, drill presses, bandsaws, and various light metal work tooling.

Students are responsible for understanding all safety protocols and policies of the facility regarding etiquette, approved material use, required safety equipment / PPE (Personal Protective Equipment), and proper equipment use.

The shop is staffed with technicians during all open hours.

Before purchasing any materials not on the N2 General Shop Approved Materials list (link below), get an MSDS sheet for the material.

The needed SDS sheets contain important information about handling, storage, safety needs and disposal of the material. Check the manufacturer or producer’s website for the MSDS sheet for your material or ask at the register before the purchase. The official SDS website may also have the needed MSDS sheets for your material as well.

NOTE TO PROFESSORS

If you would like to reserve time the shop to do a demo, please fill out the Faculty course reservation form in order to reserve . We ask that you give us three weeks notice
