Faculty Design Lab Access Policy

Mandatory Orientation

With the newly renovated space, we have overhauled our entire Canvas Orientation structure. Any and all previous orientations and authorizations for the Design Lab have been reset. 

All Community Members (Student, Faculty, & Staff) will need to complete two Canvas orientations to enter the Design Lab. 

  1. (Canvas) Making Center General Orientation 
  2. (Canvas) Design Lab Orientation

Community Members wanting to use the Risograph will need to Complete the following steps

  1. (Canvas) Making Center General Orientation 
  2. (Canvas) Design Lab Orientation
  3. (Canvas) Design Lab Risograph Introduction 
  4. Signup and Attend the in-person Risograph Orientation 
  5. (In-Person) Pass the Printer’s Exam

Community members wanting to gain access to the Fast Bind Machine will need to complete the following steps

  1. (Canvas) Making Center General Orientation 
  2. (Canvas) Design Lab Orientation
  3. Sign up and Attend the in-person Fastbind Orientation

All orientations and Authorizations will need to be renewed every School year (Fall Reset)

Technician Consultation

Consultations are open to all students wanting prior guidance on using the space and its resources. 

Such as

  • Service printing 
  • Pre-post Booking Binding 
  • Unique / Specialty printing
  • External Resources.

You do not need to complete any orientations to schedule a consultation.

A consultation does not guarantee a spot for printing or bookbinding.  

Workstation Reservation

You will only be able to make a reservation once you have completed the Design Lab Orientation on Canvas;
all requests from community members who have not completed the orientation will be rejected. 

This is a form to request a reservation for one of the following types of printers at the Design Lab :

  • Laser Printers
  • Inkjet Printers
  • Plotter

Risograph reservation form can only be attained once you complete the In-Person Risograph Orientation. 

Requests must be made a DAY in advanceThis is a request form and does not automatically give you a reservation. A confirmation email will be sent to you once your reservation is made.

A student can not make a reservation of the day of the reservation, you will need to submit the request before 8am of your target date.

  • Max duration of a reservation is 2 hours / The minimum is 30 minutes
  • A student can only have one reservation a time
  • You are only allowed to use one printer at a time.
  • You can make a new reservation once your current one is fulfilled

If you are 15 minutes late to a reservation your reservation is canceled and forfeited to anyone waiting on our walk-in printer waitlist.

Please make sure that your file is prepared and ready to print before your reservation.
If you file is not ready and you are not using the printer for more than 10 minutes from your reservation start time we will have you forfeit your reservation.

There is no limitation to how many prints you can make within your reservation.Your reservation time limit has a hard cutoff and regardless of where you are in the print you will be kicked off the printer once your time is up.

When requesting a reservation through our Reservation Form (Below) please choose time slots that are not BUSY.

About the Design Lab

The Design Lab is a 2D digital production space. We provide access to design tools, software, equipment, and printing services around the creative printing needs of all students in the New School. Students get to bring their own paper and experimental materials to print on our vast array of printers. Besides the common printers you encounter throughout the school, the laser and inkjet printers, we offer access to unique machines like the Risograph printers, Vinyl Cutter, Roll scanner, Solvent Printer (For sticker Printing Only), Dye Sublimation Printer, and the UV Printer. Students have access to booklet production tools and other resources to produce a book. Technicians are on duty during open hours to assist you with how to properly and safely use the resources in the space.
